Mac Droppings: Preventing *.DS_Store* file creation

The Finder on OS X systems places .DS_Store (Desktop Services Store) files in every folder that it accesses, even folders on remote systems. These Mac Droppings clutter up servers and are just plain ugly when viewed by non-Mac users.

To configure a Mac OS X user account so that the .DS_Store files are not created when interacting with a remote file server, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Terminal.
  2. Type: defaults write DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
  3. Press Return.
  4. Restart the computer.

You have to do this for each separate account!
